Guy Baker, PhD, CPBC


Guy Baker PhD, CFP®, RHU®, CLU®, ChFC®, AEP, CFWC is founder and managing director of the Wealth Teams Alliance focusing on assisting owners of closely held businesses transition into retirement. WTA is SEC registered investment advisory firm managing assets for individuals, corporations, retirement plans and foundations. He also manages BTA Advisory Group and BMI Consulting. Both companies serve the compensation, benefit and succession needs of small and medium sized businesses.

Guy gained extensive experience as a wealth advisor starting when he first entered the profession as a college student marketing insurance to college students. After graduation, he attended graduate school and continued by training and supervising other college agents he recruited from five local campuses. Upon graduation, he was heavily recruited for industry, but decided to make the financial services his career and quickly rose to the top of the industry in sales. He qualified his first year for the Million Dollar Round Table, making him one of the youngest members in its history. MDRT is considered to be the premier international association of financial advisors with 65,000 members in 85 countries. He then qualified to be among the first members for the Top of the Table, a group comprised of the top 2% of the MDRT a membership he has maintained since 1975. Guy was elected President of MDRT in 2010. He also was elected the 2000 President of MDRT Foundation, a large foundation supporting the charitable efforts of members.

He first formed his own consulting company in 1982, Bayly Martin and Fay Compensation Services in affiliation with the 5th largest property and casualty firm in the world. He designed and installed compensation plans for major corporations in America including Disney, Fluor, Perrier, National Education and Mars Company among many others. In 1986, he bought back his company and formed Baker Thomsen and Associates, a compensation and benefits consulting firm for medium sized employers. He also was a founding shareholder in the Economic Research Institute.

Guy is well know in the life insurance industry, having spoken to industry groups for more the 40 years about insurance strategies, tax planning and principles of success. He is one only a few to have been selected to speak at the annual MDRT meeting more than 25 times.

Guy is the recipient of the Preston Hotchkis Award and the Pacific Life Agent of the Year. He was selected as a Distinguished Accredited Estate Planner in 2005 and was admitted to the National Association of Estate Planning Counsels’ Hall of Fame. In 2019, he was selected as the recipient of the John Newton Russell Award, the highest honor given nationally in the financial services industry. He is the 77th person to be so honored. He has been invited to speak in over 32 countries, lecturing on sales psychology and business principles. He has written six books and been published extensively in industry journals and magazines. He is also quoted often by Forbes, USA Today and Newsweek among other media publications. He was selected by Worth Magazine as one of the 250 top advisors in the USA and is a regular recipient of the Five Star Professional Award in Orange County, California where he lives and works.

Guy passionately believes people do what they want to do when they want to do it. His job is to help them discover what they want to do and then show them the best way to do it. Guy and his wife Colleen live in San Juan Capistrano, Ca. and have four adult children, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. They have been married since 1967.
